Baku: From September 9 to 12, the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, alongside the State Agency for the Regulation of Nuclear and Radiological Activities (NRFTDA) under the Ministry of Emergency Situations, conducted a training course on ‘Implementing Nuclear Security for Large Public Events,’ the Ministry’s Press Service reported to APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the training aimed to bolster nuclear and radiation safety measures during mass gatherings, such as the imminent Formula 1 Qatar Airways Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku. It sought to enhance the theoretical knowledge of staff from relevant agencies on nuclear and radiation safety and offered guidance on using equipment temporarily imported through the ‘Nuclear Security for Major Public Events’ program.

On the opening day, NRFTDA head Murad Pashayev addressed the significance of the event and extended gratitude to the IAEA for its support. Employees from the Ministry’s relevant divisions participated in the training, where IAEA experts shared experiences from the United Arab Emirates and France, commending Azerbaijan’s efforts in ensuring nuclear and radiation safety during large-scale public events.

The IAEA experts provided in-depth information on the subject and delivered presentations on the proper use of relevant equipment. The interactive training included comprehensive responses to participants’ queries.

As a part of the program, IAEA specialists visited the Baku City Circuit, the venue of the Formula 1 Qatar Airways Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and the Baku Crystal Hall to review on-site radiological safety measures.
