Baku: Negotiations are underway on launching gas exports from the Absheron field to Trkiye starting in 2029, Prime Minister Ali Asadov said at the 12th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Trkiye, APA reports.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Ali Asadov highlighted the significance of the mega energy projects jointly implemented by Azerbaijan and Trkiye, noting their substantial regional and global impact. Projects such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipelines, alongside TANAP/TAP, have connected the two nations and reshaped the energy landscape of Eurasia. Azerbaijani oil and gas transported via Trkiye play a crucial role in ensuring the energy security of numerous countries. The current geopolitical climate has made increasing transit volumes through energy pipelines a pressing issue, with the Southern Gas Corridor being of strategic importance.
In recent months, Azerbaijan has expanded its gas export network to 14 countries, ten of which are European. Beyond Europe, Azerbaijan has emerged as a reliable partner in enhancing the energy security of the Middle East. Notably, Azerbaijani gas was transported to Syria for the first time in August via Trkiye. In March, the Presidents inaugurated the Igdir-Nakhchivan Natural Gas Pipeline, a project symbolizing the brotherhood between the countries and bolstering Nakhchivan's energy security.
SOCAR and BOTAS are collaborating under the framework of the Intergovernmental Agreement signed in 2024. Their cooperation encompasses the purchase and sale of gas and swap operations for supplying gas to Nakhchivan and exporting to third countries.
Promising projects continue to emerge in the Azerbaijan-Trkiye energy partnership. In June, Trkiye Petrolleri Anonim Ortakligi (TPAO) acquired a 30 percent stake in the 'Shafag-Asiman' offshore field located in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea. Both nations are committed to unlocking the full potential of this promising field. Additionally, negotiations are ongoing to commence gas exports from the Absheron field to Trkiye by 2029.
