Baku: An officer from the Azerbaijan Army serving as a military observer in the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) has been recognized for his exemplary service.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Azerbaijan reported that Major Garagozov Mehman Hamdiya was awarded a medal and an honorary certificate by the Force Commander of UNMISS, Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian.
Major Garagozov was acknowledged for his bravery and courage during a mission where he successfully extracted the Long Duration Patrol from a conflict zone while disregarding his personal safety. This act of commitment earned him the prestigious recognition.
The deployment of Azerbaijani servicemen to the Republic of South Sudan was approved on 30 November 2018 by the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, allowing four servicemen to participate in the mission under the UNMISS command.
