Baku: Azerbaijan has commenced the implementation of an amnesty initiative as part of the "Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty," which was adopted on December 19 by the Milli Majlis. This initiative, proposed by President Ilham Aliyev, is aimed at releasing thousands of convicts, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Amnesty Act is being executed within the institutions of the Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice. The act is set to impact close to 8,000 convicts, with approximately 5,000 individuals expected to be released from imprisonment. Additionally, around 3,000 prisoners will have their sentences reduced by six months.

The amnesty will also extend to more than 10,000 individuals facing non-custodial types of punishment. Over 7,000 people are anticipated to be released from sentences involving restrictions of liberty, highlighting the significant impact of the amnesty on the probation field.

The Ministry of Justice has stated that the implementation of the Decision will be conducted in a phased manner, ensuring compliance with the relevant provisions of the amnesty act. The Ministry will also keep the public informed about the progress of the amnesty.

The decision to declare the amnesty was officially adopted by the Milli Majlis, following the initiative put forward by President Ilham Aliyev.
