BAKU: Azerbaijan has been selected to host the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), a decision that underscores the international community’s trust in the country’s capacity to address climate issues. This announcement was highlighted during a Parliamentary Meeting organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the Speaker of the Milli Majlis, Sahiba Gafarova, addressed the growing difficulties posed by the climate crisis and emphasized the need for increased efforts to mitigate its negative impacts. She urged that more time and resources are essential to effectively combat climate change, stressing the importance of enhancing legislative measures and urging governments to mobilize their efforts rigorously.
Gafarova also emphasized the necessity of increased cooperation with civil society to better understand their concerns and to ensure a more comprehensive approach to climate action. She highlighted Azerbaijan’s role in serving as a
bridge, attributing the selection of Azerbaijan as the COP29 host to the global community’s confidence in the country’s ability and experience in this realm.
