Baku: Those who destroy cultural assets through negligence may face up to two years in prison in Azerbaijan. This legislative change is part of amendments to the Criminal Code, enacted by a decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the law stipulates that any violation of the legally established rules for the protection, research, and use of cultural assets protected by the state that results in their destruction through negligence will lead to severe penalties. These penalties include a fine of up to double the amount of damage caused by the crime, restriction of liberty for up to two years, or imprisonment for the same term.

The new legal measures are set to take effect on February 1, 2026, indicating a significant step by the Azerbaijani government to preserve and protect its cultural heritage.
