Azerbaijan Endorses UN Agreement for Urban Development in East Zangezur

Baku: Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has approved a contribution agreement between the government of Azerbaijan and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), APA reports. The agreement focuses on the project titled 'Towards Smart, Sustainable and Inclusive Human Settlements in the East Zangezur Economic Region of the Republic of Azerbaijan - Integrated Territorial Planning for Sustainable Urban Development'.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Aliyev signed a decree to formalize the agreement. This move marks a significant step toward sustainable urban development in the East Zangezur Economic Region. Following the agreement's activation, Azerbaijan's State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture will oversee the implementation of its terms.

Additionally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been tasked with informing the UN-Habitat Secretariat that all necessary domestic procedures for the agreement's activation have been completed. The contribution agreement was initially signed in New York on 15 July 2026.
