BAKU: Azerbaijan is in discussions with the United States to enhance cooperation on climate change initiatives, as the country prepares to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change this November. The talks were held between Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources and COP29 President-designate, and John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the US President for International Climate Policy.

According to Trend News Agency, the meeting underscored the importance of collaborative international efforts to address climate change challenges, particularly in the lead-up to COP29. The event is a significant milestone following the decision made at COP28 in Dubai last December to host the upcoming session in Azerbaijan.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, established during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, aims to prevent harmful human impact on the climate system. The COP serves as the primary governing b
ody for the implementation of the Convention, with 198 countries as parties. The annual COP meetings have been a platform for international climate policy discussions since the first session held in Berlin in 1995.
