Baku: President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan expressed confidence that the newly launched Global South NGO Platform will play a crucial role in advocating for the rights of people from the Global South. Addressing the participants at the founding conference of the platform in Baku, the President highlighted Azerbaijan’s growing influence as a powerful voice for the Global South. He emphasized the significance of the platform’s launch in Baku as a testament to Azerbaijan’s active engagement during its chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement and its presidency of COP29.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Aliyev underscored Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering dialogue between the Global South and the Global North. He noted the importance of cultivating mutual trust and understanding, and the country’s balancing role in achieving consensus. This effort culminated in what he referred to as the ‘Baku Breakthrough’ during COP29, which Azerbaijan hosted.
The President highlighted the historic success of COP29, which brought together approximately 80,000 participants from 197 countries. He expressed pride in the legacy of COP29, which showcased Azerbaijan’s role in the international community and its dedication to amplifying the voices of the Global South.
