Azerbaijan Human Rights Commissioner Representatives Visit Detainees in “Abzas Media” Case.


Baku: Representatives of Azerbaijan’s Human Rights Commissioner have met with individuals arrested in the “Abzas Media” case at the Baku Investigation Detention Center. The visit was conducted under the directive of Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, as part of the National Preventive Group’s (MPG) ongoing efforts to monitor detention facilities, as reported by APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the visit was organized in line with the Ombudsperson’s National Preventive Mechanism activities and complied with the UN “Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment” and the “Constitutional Law on the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan.” The primary aim was to assess the conditions and treatment of detainees, as well as to ensure their rights are protected.

During the visit, specialized members of the NPM, including a doctor and a psychologi
st, conducted confidential meetings with several detainees such as Sevinj Abbasova, Elnara Gasimova, and Nargiz Absalamova. The detainees’ complaints were heard and addressed on-site when possible, and they were informed of their rights and the powers of the Ombudsperson.

The visit concluded with discussions with the detention center’s management, during which recommendations based on national and international legislation were provided.
