Azerbaijan Introduces Excise Tax on Sweetened Drinks and Chips

Baku:Sweetened mineral and carbonated drinks, along with chips, are set to be added to the list of excisable goods in Azerbaijan. This announcement was made by Nijat Imanov, Head of the Main Department of Tax Policy at the State Tax Service, during a meeting of the Milli Majlis Committee on Economic Policy, Industry and Entrepreneurship.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, Imanov explained that the inclusion of these products as excisable goods aligns with international practices, commonly adopted by various countries. These products are generally considered harmful, but the primary aim of this measure is to implement a widely used international tax policy practice.

Under a proposed amendment to the Tax Code, sweetened mineral and carbonated drinks will require mandatory excise stamp labeling and will be taxed at AZN 0.10 per liter if produced domestically. Similarly, chips will be subjected to an excise tax of AZN 1 per kilogram.
