Baku: A new draft law titled "On Fisheries" has been prepared and discussed at the Milli Majlis, Azerbaijan's national legislative body. The draft law, which consists of 8 chapters and 30 articles, aims to modernize the country's fisheries sector through digitalization and enhanced regulatory mechanisms.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the draft law outlines mechanisms for the digitalization of fisheries management. This includes the registration and tracking of fisheries entities, resources used, and products circulated through advanced information systems. Data on fisheries entities, facilities, infrastructure, fishing gear, and vessels will be collected and managed by an institution designated by the relevant executive authority, adhering to the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan "On Personal Data." Additionally, information on fisheries water bodies and fishing grounds will be transferred to ensure comprehensive data in the state cadastre and state register of real estate.

The draft law also proposes scientific-based quotas for fish stock usage, transparency in fishing permit issuance, and real-time monitoring through electronic registration systems and remote tracking technologies. Technical requirements for fishing vessels, gear, and infrastructure will be established, alongside registration and control systems to combat illegal fishing and promote efficient resource use.

Upon enactment, this new law will replace the existing Law "On Fisheries" No. 457-IQ dated March 27, 1998. The draft law was put to a vote and has been adopted in the third reading.
