Baku: On October 21, the second meeting of the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan Supreme Interstate Council was held in Astana, attended by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, President Tokayev opened the meeting with a speech emphasizing the importance of the event for the strategic partnership and allied relations between the two nations. He highlighted the shared historical roots and cultural heritage that bind Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Tokayev acknowledged the significant contributions of President Aliyev in achieving the current high level of relations and praised his leadership in the peaceful settlement of the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
President Aliyev, in his response, expressed gratitude for the hospitality extended by Kazakhstan and reiterated the alignment of views on various bilateral, regional, and international issues. He congratulated Kazakhstan on its socioeconomic development and its role in international affairs. Aliyev also acknowledged Kazakhstan’s support for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty during the years of occupation.
The leaders discussed the peace process in the South Caucasus and the new era of peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. They also talked about the Washington summit, which played a crucial role in normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Furthermore, Aliyev mentioned the potential of the Middle Corridor and the Zangezur Corridor in enhancing transport and logistics capacity.
The discussions also covered trade and economic ties, with both countries pleased about the growing trade turnover and the potential of the joint investment fund. Aliyev expressed appreciation for Kazakhstan’s support in the restoration of the Garabagh region, highlighting the operational Kurmangazy Children’s Creativity Center as a symbol of Kazakh-Azerbaijani friendship.
Cultural and energy cooperation were also on the agenda, with Aliyev proposing regular cultural exchanges and discussing the development of the energy sector, including a trilateral agreement on a Caspian subsea electric cable.
The meeting underscored the extensive agenda for cooperation between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
