Baku: A new requirement targeting the publication and broadcasting of fake information in the media has been introduced in Azerbaijan, as reported by APA. This development arises from an amendment to the “Media Law,” which was deliberated during a session of the Azerbaijani Parliament.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the amendment entails the addition of Article 14.1.11-1, which explicitly prohibits the dissemination of false information. The Azerbaijani media and public have expressed significant concern over the prevalence of misinformation from unknown sources, which is often amplified by social networks and shared widely by media outlets. This trend has led to the circulation of inaccurate information within society, impacting the integrity of media channels and the reputation of journalists. In response to the societal demand for accurate information, the proposed amendments aim to enhance the mechanisms to combat fake news.

The move aligns with similar legislative measures in Turkey, where the “Law on Combating Disinformation” has been enacted. This Turkish law extends to internet media and classifies it under periodicals, reflecting a regional trend towards stricter regulations on misinformation.

Following discussions, the Azerbaijani Parliament approved the draft law in its third reading, signaling the country’s commitment to curbing the spread of fake news and safeguarding the quality of information in the media landscape.
