Azerbaijan President Discusses Karabakh Conflict and Ceasefire in Interview with Italian TV

BAKU: The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, has addressed the recent developments in the ongoing conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region during an interview with the Italian Rai 1 TV channel. He emphasized the conditional nature of the current ceasefire, attributing its potential success to Armenia’s adherence to the agreement, and reiterated Azerbaijan’s commitment to reclaiming its territories.

According to Trend News Agency, President Aliyev detailed the circumstances that led to the outbreak of hostilities in September 2020, citing Armenia’s attempts to disrupt negotiation processes and provocations along the border. He emphasized that the new ceasefire, which came into effect at 8 a.m. local time, had already been jeopardized by shelling from Armenia just minutes after it was established. Aliyev reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s position, stating that a constructive approach from Armenia, including the acknowledgment of Azerbaijan’s territorial claims and the return of refugees, is essential f
or lasting peace.

In response to accusations from France and Russia regarding the involvement of foreign mercenaries and Turkish military presence in the conflict, President Aliyev firmly denied these allegations, describing them as unfounded and lacking evidence. He criticized the co-chair countries of the OSCE Minsk Group for their perceived bias and emphasized Azerbaijan’s military capabilities, asserting that no external forces are operating within its territory.

Addressing the possibility of international assistance in resolving the conflict, Aliyev acknowledged Italy’s potential role, given its historical involvement in the Minsk Group and its diplomatic relations with both Azerbaijan and Armenia. He noted the positive examples of autonomy and self-governance in regions like Italy’s Alto Adige/South Tyrol, suggesting that such models could be considered for Nagorno-Karabakh, though Armenia has historically rejected these proposals.

Looking forward, President Aliyev expressed hope for a peaceful and p
rosperous future for the Karabakh region, envisioning coexistence between Azerbaijani and Armenian communities. He underscored the need for goodwill and reconciliation, drawing parallels to post-World War II Europe, but also warned that Azerbaijan is prepared to reclaim its territories by force if necessary. Aliyev urged the Armenian leadership to reconsider its stance to facilitate a peaceful resolution.
