Baku:Work is progressing on the development of the Middle Corridor, with infrastructure improvements being a key focus for Azerbaijan Railways. Emil Mammadov, Adviser to the Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC, highlighted these efforts during a panel discussion at the 'German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026.'
According to Azeri-Press news agency, Mammadov explained that recent projects have included electrifying the railway system, reconstructing stations, and implementing other infrastructure upgrades. These efforts aim to enhance the capacity to handle increased cargo volumes. Additionally, work is underway to streamline procedures and establish a unified documentation system, which will facilitate quicker transit through the countries along the Middle Corridor.
The transfer of Alat Port to the railway administration's management is another strategic move to boost operational efficiency at this key entry point to the Caucasus region. Mammadov noted that container transportation volumes at Baku Port have been rising, a trend expected to continue this year, supported by growth in both bulk and container cargo volumes.
He emphasized that the observed growth is attributed not only to infrastructure advancements but also to improved operational efficiency. Coordination and cooperation with various partners along the Middle Corridor are also critical components of their strategy. Azerbaijan Railways is actively engaging with stakeholders both domestically and along the corridor to enhance these initiatives.
