Baku: The Middle Corridor is enhancing its role as a key transit route in Eurasia, as evidenced by a 32% rise in transit traffic, according to Rovshan Rustamov, Chairman of Azerbaijan Railways JSC (ADY). Rustamov highlighted this growth during the plenary session of the Council of Railway Transport of the CIS countries, held in Baku.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Azerbaijan Railways has received 317 block trains via the Middle Corridor in the first ten months of the current year, with 119 of these being transit trains. This increase underlines the corridor’s growing significance as a reliable and safe route for trade.

Rustamov also noted the strategic importance of the North-South transport corridor, which strengthens Azerbaijan’s position as a vital link for trade between northern and southern regions. The Sumgayit-Yalama railway line, a crucial part of this corridor, is set to complete its reconstruction by the end of the year. Additionally, Azerbaijan Railways is advancing the construction of a terminal in Astara, Iran, which is expected to be finished by the first quarter of 2026.

Since February, the Baku International Sea Trade Port has been integrated into Azerbaijan Railways, marking a significant step in the country’s comprehensive transport strategy. The port is evolving into a modern logistics center, playing a pivotal role in integrating Azerbaijan and the region into the global trade network. Its infrastructure, digital management, and ‘green port’ concept are designed to optimize cargo flows between Europe and Asia. Alongside the Alat Logistics Zone, the port is crucial for the sustainable operation of the Middle Corridor.
