Baku: Azerbaijan has announced a reduction in the length of active military service during peacetime by six months for reserve officers. The change affects officers called up from the reserve for compulsory service as well as those who voluntarily enlist for active service under contract.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, this adjustment is part of proposed amendments to the laws 'On Approval of the Regulations on Military Service' and 'On Military Duty and Military Service.' These amendments were deliberated during a session of the Milli Majlis.

Previously, the legislation stipulated that the duration of peacetime active military service was 18 months for officers called up from the reserve or those who voluntarily enlisted, and up to three years for officers who voluntarily enlisted under contract. The proposed amendments will reduce the service period for reserve officers to one year. After completing this period, officers may transition to the regular officer corps through mutual agreement.

For foreign nationals and stateless individuals enlisting voluntarily under contract, the service period remains up to three years, with the option to renew the contract by mutual agreement upon completion.

The draft law was put to a vote and successfully adopted in the third reading.
