Paris: Azerbaijan has been elected as a member of the UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict for the term 2025-2029. This significant development took place during the 16th meeting of the States Parties to the Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention, held from December 1 to 2.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Azerbaijan was among six countries vying for four available seats on the committee. In the first round of competitive elections, Azerbaijan emerged with a majority of votes from the participating states, securing its position on the committee.

The UNESCO Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict plays a crucial role in ensuring the safeguarding of cultural properties during armed conflicts. It is also responsible for monitoring compliance with the 1954 Hague Convention and its Second Protocol, as well as providing technical, legal, and institutional support to states in this domain.

Azerbaijan’s successful election to the committee underscores the country’s strong standing within the international community regarding cultural heritage protection. It also highlights Azerbaijan’s active participation on international platforms and its consistent efforts in policy-making related to cultural preservation.
