Baku: A conceptual approach to the implementation of energy storage systems in Azerbaijan may be presented by the end of September, as announced by Javid Abdullayev, Director of the State Agency for Renewable Energy Sources under the Ministry of Energy. This announcement was made during the inauguration of a modern renewable energy laboratory at Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU), as reported by APA-Economics.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, efforts are currently focused on developing a regulatory framework for the integration of renewable energy sources and the deployment of energy storage systems within Azerbaijan's energy infrastructure. Abdullayev highlighted the ongoing work on regulatory measures and mentioned that a prominent research institute from China is examining Azerbaijan's grid to provide insights on renewable energy integration.
Currently, Azerbaijan hosts two energy storage systems, each with a capacity of 125 MW. Abdullayev noted that the analysis by the Chinese institute will help determine the necessary percentage of installed capacity that should be supported by batteries, based on the anticipated volume of capacity to be installed.
Abdullayev emphasized the importance of a cautious approach to integrating renewable energy, noting the limitations of incorporating unlimited renewable capacity into the system. He acknowledged the role of battery storage systems, including the exploration of technologies beyond lithium batteries, as vital components of this strategy.
Further highlighting future plans, Abdullayev disclosed that Azerbaijan is considering the establishment of pumped hydro storage power plants. The potential use of Azerbaijan's water resources, particularly those in territories recently liberated from occupation, is seen as a promising opportunity for the country's energy strategy.
