Baku: The form of identity cards in Azerbaijan is set to change, expanding the range of information they contain, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, this development is part of an amendment to the law “On the Identity Card of a Citizen of the Republic of Azerbaijan,” discussed at a recent session of the Milli Majlis, the Azerbaijani Parliament.

The proposed amendment aims to align the Azerbaijani identity cards with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standard No. 9303. This change seeks to resolve issues encountered with the current identity cards, particularly the absence of the holder’s address, which causes challenges when using the card as a travel document, especially in relation to Trkiye.

The amendment includes adding information about the individual’s place of residence and citizenship to the identity card. Additionally, it proposes that only essential information be stored on the card’s electronic chip, enhancing the card’s functionality.

Another significant change involves the management of personal information such as marital status, family details, and military service. This data will now be managed through the interdepartmental automated information retrieval system (IAMAS) and will be cryptographically protected to ensure confidentiality and integrity.

The draft law also includes updates to the rules for issuing identity cards. Changes in residence will now necessitate a card replacement. Moreover, any technical or content errors identified in the card or its electronic medium are to be corrected without incurring a state fee.

These changes are designed to ensure that identity card information is managed using modern, secure, and flexible systems. This is expected to simplify documentation procedures and improve service accessibility for citizens. The draft law was voted on and adopted in the third reading after parliamentary discussions.
