Azerbaijan to Present Methane Reduction Initiatives at COP29 in Baku

TREND, Baku — In an exclusive interview with Trend News Agency, Professor Steven Hamburg, Senior Vice President and Chief Scientist at the International Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), outlined the significant methane reduction initiatives that Azerbaijan will present at the upcoming COP29 conference.

According to Trend News Agency, Professor Hamburg emphasized the critical importance of the Declaration on Methane, which targets curbing emissions in the oil and gas sector. He noted that alongside the efforts to reduce atmospheric methane, Azerbaijan is taking steps to address organic methane emissions from food waste, focusing on land cleanliness as well as atmospheric purity.

The 29th session of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, to be held in Baku from November 11-22, is poised to endorse the implementation of several global climate ambitions. "I believe there are real opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, especially in the oil and gas industry," said Hamburg, highlighting the potential for technological advancements to make a significant impact.

The conference expects to foster progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, essential to meeting the climate goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Efficient management of fossil fuel use and production processes is critical to these efforts, Hamburg added.

With around 60 documents ready to be signed, the expectations for COP29 are high, aiming to achieve tangible progress in global climate initiatives.
