Baku: The Preamble of the Constitution of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is undergoing amendments. This development comes as the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan 'On the Approval of Amendments to the Constitution of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic' was approved by an order from President Ilham Aliyev.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the previous version of the Preamble mentioned the Moscow Treaty of March 16, 1921, and the Kars Treaty of October 13, 1921, both of which were fundamental in establishing Nakhchivan's autonomy and its territorial boundaries as an integral part of Azerbaijan. Historically, Nakhchivan has undergone several name changes, beginning as the Nakhchivan Soviet Socialist Republic in 1921, later becoming the Nakhchivan region, and eventually the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic in 1990.
The revised version of the Constitution now affirms that the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic is an inseparable part of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The amendments highlight the principles established in the Declaration 'On the Restoration of the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan' dated August 30, 1991, the Constitutional Act 'On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan' dated October 18, 1991, and the Constitution of the Republic of Azerbaijan adopted by a nationwide referendum on November 12, 1995.
