Azerbaijani players Nicat Abasov and Aydin Suleymanli have earned accolades at the 2026 European Individual Chess Championship in Poland. The championship concluded recently with a closing ceremony in Katowice, where Abasov and Suleymanli were awarded silver and bronze medals, respectively, along with trophies for their performances.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the event witnessed a record number of participants, with 501 players representing 43 European federations. The competitors battled over 11 rounds, vying for a prize fund of £100,000 and coveted qualification spots for the upcoming FIDE World Chess Cup.
In addition to the notable achievements of Abasov and Suleymanli, Mammad Muradli, who finished in fourth place, also secured a qualification for next year's World Cup.
