Azerbaijani Citizens Testify on Torture and Abuse During Captivity in Armenia

Baku: During ongoing proceedings at the Baku Military Court on July 17, Azerbaijani citizen Idris Mammadov reported that he was captured and taken hostage during battles in February 1993.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Mammadov testified that he was held in territories of Azerbaijan formerly occupied by Armenian armed forces, including the basement of a house in Khankendi and Shusha prison. He detailed that his captivity involved torture, such as beatings with batons, punches, and kicks. Mammadov survived on minimal sustenance, relying on small amounts of bread and water over the three-month period.

Another victim, Maarif Rustamov, recounted his experience from the 44-day war in 2020. Rustamov was severely wounded on September 27 during an incident at Murov mountain near the Kalbajar district. He noted that alongside him, two others were injured and four individuals lost their lives during the conflict.

The court is currently addressing charges against Armenian nationals for crimes including war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, aggression, terrorism, and violations of the laws of war. The proceedings also cover charges such as financing terrorism, violent seizure and retention of power, and other serious offenses.
