Azerbaijani Diaspora Leader in Ivanovo Stripped of Russian Passport

Ivanovo: Asif Mammadov, chairman of the public organization 'National-Cultural Autonomy of Azerbaijanis' in Russia's Ivanovo region, has been stripped of his Russian citizenship. The decision was executed by Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), citing 'activities posing a threat to national security.'

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Asif Mammadov had sought to run for a seat in the Ivanovo City Duma in September 2025 and was registered as a candidate. However, his candidacy was annulled by the Ivanovo Election Commission following an online scandal that erupted after this information became public.

The revocation of Russian citizenship for leaders of Azerbaijani diaspora organizations in Russia is not an isolated case. Similar actions have been taken against diaspora leaders in the Arkhangelsk, Moscow, and Ulyanovsk regions, as well as in the city of Moscow and several other regions.
