Azerbaijani Energy Minister Engages with UN Official on Sustainable Development Cooperation

Baku: Parviz Shahbazov, Minister of Energy, met with Vladanka Andreeva, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, marking the conclusion of her mission in the country. The discussions centered on the collaborative efforts between Azerbaijan and the UN concerning energy and sustainable development.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Minister Shahbazov highlighted the importance of energy efficiency and renewable energy, noting these as key priorities in the cooperation aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He also mentioned Azerbaijan's enhanced role in the global climate agenda, citing its policies and initiatives in green energy and energy transition. Azerbaijan's commitment to reducing emissions by 40% by 2035, as stated in its new Nationally Defined Contribution (NDC) at COP30, was acknowledged during the meeting.

The dialogue also included discussions on the development of the SDG7 Roadmap for Azerbaijan and preparations for a side event on energy at the upcoming 82nd session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Baku next April.

Both parties exchanged views on various initiatives, including the activities of the UNIDO-ECO Clean Energy Center, advancements in renewable energy sources, the concept of hydrogen, interconnector projects for interregional electricity, and decarburization in the oil and gas sector. Upcoming cooperative events with the UN were also discussed.
