Azerbaijani Journalists’ Code Updated to Address AI and Personal Rights

Baku:Amendments to the 'Code of Ethical Conduct for Azerbaijani Journalists' were adopted at the 9th Congress of Azerbaijani Journalists, emphasizing the need to address the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and the protection of personal rights.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the Press Council stated that these amendments are a response to contemporary demands and aim to align media activities with new technologies while enhancing their effectiveness. A notable addition is the sixth principle, "Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence," which includes four clauses. The first clause encourages media organizations to develop internal documents outlining the use of AI, specifying its purposes, limits, and editorial responsibilities.

The second clause of the sixth principle cautions against the unquestioning acceptance of AI-generated information, advocating for critical assessment to preserve journalistic integrity. Furthermore, clause 6.3 requires verification of content, factual accuracy, and sources of AI-assisted materials before publication, emphasizing ethical and legal responsibilities. The fourth clause highlights the importance of respecting copyright and personal data confidentiality.

Additional amendments were made to the third principle, "Protection of Honor and Dignity, Inviolability of Private Life," with five new clauses. These changes reflect explanations by the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan concerning the protection of personality rights. Clause 3.13 addresses the risks posed by information technologies to personal privacy, while clause 3.14 restricts the dissemination of true information about non-public figures without consent.

Clause 3.15 guides journalists to avoid derogatory tones when reporting on social media content, aligning with existing provisions to uphold language purity. Clause 3.16 stresses public interest as a guiding factor in journalistic activities, and clause 3.17 underscores the need for respect for public figures' legitimate interests while scrutinizing their activities.

In conclusion, the amendments are designed to promote sensitivity and professional creativity among journalists, ensuring that media functions effectively as the fourth estate.
