Baku: Azerbaijani non-governmental organizations have issued an appeal to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, expressing their discontent with recent actions by a group of U.S. congressmen.
According to Azeri-Press news agency, the NGOs have accused these congressmen of sabotaging the peace efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia, a process that gained momentum during the Trump Administration.
The appeal highlights the frustration within Azerbaijan regarding what they perceive as a biased stance by certain U.S. congressmen. These congressmen have been accused of attempting to disrupt the ongoing peace process in the South Caucasus, which is reportedly progressing with a tentative agreement already reached between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia. The NGOs criticized the congressmen for allegedly inciting tension and obstructing peaceful resolution efforts.
The appeal also mentioned the role of pro-Armenian figures in the Biden-Blinken era, who are accused of undermining former President Trump’s initiatives in the region. The Azerbaijani NGOs pointed to the lack of accountability for those involved in past conflicts and war crimes, and criticized the congressmen’s alleged financial incentives from the Armenian lobby in the U.S.
Furthermore, the appeal referenced the conviction of former Senator Bob Menendez for corruption and bribery, and criticized Democratic Senator Adam Schiff for his opposition to President Trump. They also recalled an incident involving Congressman Frank Pallone, who was met with protests during his visit to Baku and had to cut his trip short.
The Azerbaijani NGOs emphasized the need for the return of displaced Azerbaijanis to their ancestral homes and criticized the Swiss Parliament’s actions, which they claim undermine peace in the region. The NGOs called for the Trump Administration to recognize what they see as the congressmen’s disruptive actions, which they believe threaten the improving bilateral relations between the United States and Azerbaijan.
The appeal was signed by a number of prominent Azerbaijani NGO leaders, including Ramil Iskandarli, Aziz Alakbarli, and Amir Aliyev, among others, representing a range of organizations focused on cultural heritage, social welfare, and human rights.
