Azerbaijani Officials Appeal to US Congress for Support in Peace Efforts

Accra:Members of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis, together with leaders of various non-governmental organizations, have addressed a letter to US senators and members of the House of Representatives. They responded to an earlier communication from US lawmakers concerning Azerbaijan.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the Azerbaijani representatives emphasized the importance of dialogue with the United States Congress and expressed a shared commitment to achieving lasting peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia. They highlighted the historical context of the conflict, noting the longstanding impact of occupation and violence, including the unresolved fate of missing persons and the ongoing threat of landmines.

The letter praised President Ilham Aliyev's efforts towards peace and regional economic integration, noting the significance of the August 2025 Washington Peace Summit and President Trump's role in advancing these efforts. Azerbaijani officials outlined recent developments such as trade initiatives and the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), which aim to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen the US-Azerbaijan strategic partnership.

Azerbaijani MPs contested certain characterizations made by the US Congress, defending the actions taken against individuals involved in unlawful separatist activities and affirming Azerbaijan's respect for Armenia's sovereignty. They also urged Congress to acknowledge the destruction of Azerbaijani cultural heritage and to repeal Section 907 of the FREEDOM Support Act, arguing that it hinders bilateral relations.

The letter concluded with a call for bipartisan support from US leaders to reinforce the progress made in the peace process, encouraging a cooperative approach to resolve outstanding issues and secure a lasting peace in the South Caucasus.
