Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Addresses US Senators on Peace Efforts

Baku:Members of the Milli Majlis and various non-governmental organizations in Azerbaijan have sent a letter to US senators and members of the House of Representatives in response to a recent communication from the US Congress regarding Azerbaijan.

According to Azeri-Press news agency, the letter emphasizes Azerbaijan's commitment to achieving a lasting peace with Armenia, highlighting the historical and legal context of the conflict and the significant progress made through diplomatic efforts. The letter outlines Azerbaijan's past challenges, including the occupation of its territory, the displacement of over one million Azerbaijanis, and ongoing issues such as landmines and missing persons. It also touches on the recent steps taken towards normalization and economic integration in the region, including the Washington Peace Summit and the resulting agreements.

The Azerbaijani representatives urge the US Congress to focus on humanitarian demining and to acknowledge the plight of missing persons. They stress the importance of a balanced approach to cultural heritage protection and call for the repeal of Section 907 of the FREEDOM Support Act, which they argue hinders the full potential of US-Azerbaijan relations. The letter also disputes the characterization of certain detained individuals and territorial issues, urging a respectful acknowledgment of Azerbaijan's sovereignty and judicial processes.

The letter concludes with a call for US bipartisan support to consolidate recent diplomatic achievements, advance regional stability, and strengthen US-Azerbaijan relations, emphasizing the opportunity for a new chapter in peace for the South Caucasus.
