Seoul: Leyla Masimli, an Azerbaijani national, has been honored with the prestigious title of honorary citizen of Seoul in recognition of her efforts in fostering cultural and academic ties between Azerbaijan and South Korea. Masimli, who has resided and pursued her studies in South Korea for several years, is among 17 individuals selected to receive this title in 2025.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Masimli’s accomplishments include her collaboration with a Korean writer to translate Azerbaijani folk tales into Korean. This project, supported by the Fund for Support to Azerbaijani Diaspora, resulted in the translation of seven folk tales last year. Continuing her cultural endeavors, she also translated six chapters of the epic “Kitabi-Dede Gorgud” into Korean this year, once again with the backing of the Fund.

The honorary citizenship of Seoul is bestowed upon foreign nationals who contribute significantly to the city’s development and the well-being of its inhabitants. The certificate, bearing the official signature of the Mayor of Seoul, acknowledges individuals for their achievements in areas such as social welfare, culture, economy, education, and environmental development. Since its establishment in 1958, the title has been awarded to 968 people from 100 countries.
