Azerbaijani State’s Swift Action in Repatriating Bodies of Citizens Tortured in Russia

Baku: The bodies of two Azerbaijani citizens, Ziyaddin and Huseyn Safarov, who died following alleged torture by Russian security forces, were recently returned to Azerbaijan, demonstrating the state’s resolve in addressing this sensitive issue. Seyfaddin Huseynli, the brother of the deceased and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the ‘525-ci q?zet’ newspaper, emphasized the rapid measures taken by the Azerbaijani state to bring the bodies back home, speaking to journalists at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, as reported by APA.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the return of the bodies was met with a gathering of people expressing both grief and anger. A forensic medical examination was conducted by a team in Azerbaijan, where Huseynli participated in identifying the bodies. He described the severe traces of torture and fatal injuries on the bodies, challenging the initial statement from Russian authorities, which claimed the deaths resulted from heart failure due to emotional stress. Huseynli criticized this explanation as a fabrication and expressed hope that the investigative bodies will uncover the truth.

The farewell ceremony for the Safarov brothers will take place at a residence in Aghjabadi, followed by a funeral prayer and burial in a nearby cemetery. Huseynli also mentioned others who were injured in the incident, with some still detained and facing what he described as a fabricated trial. Among them is their 61-year-old brother, Zakir Mehdi oglu Safarov, whose detention period has expired, but artificial obstacles have allegedly been created to prevent his release. Despite his concerns, Huseynli expressed belief in the power of the Azerbaijani state to resolve the matter.
