Baku: Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister and COP29 Lead Negotiator, Yalchin Rafiyev, emphasized the power of diplomacy in resolving seemingly irreconcilable differences during his address at the Fourth Climate Week (CW4) conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The event, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the urgent need for global cooperation in the face of escalating climate challenges.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Rafiyev pointed to the recent devastating floods and landslides in Nepal and China as stark reminders of the immediate impact of climate change. He stressed that these tragedies illustrate that climate change is not a distant threat but a pressing reality affecting millions today. The Deputy Foreign Minister highlighted how extreme weather events, exacerbated by phenomena like El Ni±o, are not only environmental issues but also threats to economies, security, and development.

Rafiyev underscored that climate change is a test of both resilience and diplomacy. In a world fraught with geopolitical tensions and declining trust, he noted that climate change remains an issue that transcends national boundaries and requires collective action. Reflecting on the outcomes of COP29, he stated that while consensus does not imply uniformity in positions, it involves finding common ground where diverse national interests can align towards a shared goal.
