Baku:In an exclusive interview, Fatima Tuz Zehra, President of The Gulf Observer Research Forum and Editor-in-Chief of The Gulf Observer, discussed Azerbaijan's approach to rebuilding its liberated lands and the peace process with Armenia on the sixth anniversary of the 44-day Patriotic War.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Zehra emphasized the significance of September 27 as a pivotal moment in the history of Azerbaijan and the South Caucasus. This date marks when Azerbaijan responded to military provocations by Armenia, leading to the restoration of its territorial integrity. It is remembered as a day of national pride and a time to honor the courage of Azerbaijani soldiers.
Zehra noted that Azerbaijan's actions in 2020 were legally and morally justified, emphasizing the country's right to self-defense in line with international humanitarian law. She highlighted that Azerbaijan enforced UN Security Council resolutions from 1993, which had called for the withdrawal of occupying forces.
The decisive leadership of President Ilham Aliyev during the war and subsequent diplomacy was also praised by Zehra. She credited his leadership with opening a new chapter for Azerbaijan.
Pakistan's support for Azerbaijan during the Second Garabagh War was highlighted as a reflection of the deep brotherly bond between the two nations, rooted in shared faith and history. This solidarity has contributed to a close strategic partnership.
Zehra also addressed the significance of Azerbaijan's anti-terrorist measures conducted in the Garabagh region in September 2023. These operations ended the presence of illegal Armenian armed formations and restored Azerbaijan's full sovereignty. The operation revealed the extensive damage done over three decades, including destruction of historical and cultural heritage.
The ambitious reconstruction efforts in Garabagh and East Zangezur were described by Zehra as a powerful message of choosing to rebuild rather than focus on past losses. Under the "Great Return" program, Azerbaijan has made significant progress in restoring infrastructure and facilitating the return of displaced families.
The signing of a Joint Declaration by President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in August 2025, which was witnessed by the United States, was seen as a historic milestone toward peace. Zehra highlighted the potential for new transport and trade corridors to enhance regional connectivity and commerce, benefitting countries like Pakistan.
In her closing message, Zehra expressed respect and gratitude for the Azerbaijani martyrs who sacrificed for their nation's sovereignty. She affirmed Pakistan's continued support for Azerbaijan's efforts toward peace and rebuilding.
