Baku: AZERTAC presents an interview with Klemens H. Fischer, Professor of International Relations and Geopolitics at the German University of Cologne, who shared his insights on Azerbaijan's role in shaping the new architecture of security, energy, and transport connectivity of the Caucasus region.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, Professor Fischer emphasized the significance of Azerbaijan in promoting peaceful coexistence in the Caucasus region, which lies at a geopolitical crossroads. He highlighted that the region's states face a choice between aligning with major powers or achieving neutral coexistence. Azerbaijan is seen as key to this second option, promoting regional sovereignty.

Professor Fischer also discussed Azerbaijan's strategic importance in ensuring Europe's energy security amidst the transformation of global energy markets. He noted that Europe, seeking to reduce dependence on Russian energy, could benefit from Azerbaijan's energy reserves as it enters the European market.

Regarding the Middle Corridor, a vital Eurasian logistics network, Professor Fischer pointed out Azerbaijan's crucial role. The network serves as a significant trade route connecting China and Europe, offering an alternative to Russian routes. Despite challenges in coordination and infrastructure, the Middle Corridor's importance is growing, with Azerbaijan as a central component.

Professor Fischer identified Azerbaijan as an emerging regional leader in the South Caucasus, citing factors such as the Nagorno-Karabakh situation, strategic alliances, energy resources, and diplomatic engagement. He underscored the importance of stabilizing its regional role for future development.

Finally, Professor Fischer expressed optimism about Azerbaijan's geopolitical significance over the next decade. He attributed this potential to Azerbaijan's strategic location and innovative foreign policy, which could enable it to maintain a balanced position among major powers. Azerbaijan's focus on energy security, connectivity, and multi-vector diplomacy is seen as key to its evolution as a formative force in Eurasian connectivity and energy architecture.
