Azerbaijan’s Security Service Arrests Former Balakan Executive for Embezzlement and Corruption

Baku: The Azerbaijan State Security Service has announced the arrest of Islam Vahid oglu Rzayev, the former head of the Balakan District Executive Power, for suspected corruption and embezzlement.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the State Security Service conducted thorough operational-investigative measures, which led to reasonable suspicions that Rzayev had abused his official position. It was alleged that he embezzled a significant amount of property entrusted to him and engaged in numerous acts of corruption during his tenure.

The investigation revealed that Rzayev misused his authority to embezzle state funds intended for the unemployed and low-income residents, as well as for repair and development projects in the Balakan district. He allegedly misallocated these funds and accepted bribes from officials and businesspeople.

Rzayev was detained as part of a criminal case initiated by the Investigation head department of the State Security Service. He faces charges under Articles 179.3.2, pertaining to large-scale embezzlement, and 311.3.2, relating to repeated bribery, of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan. A preventive measure of arrest has been imposed by the court.

Investigative-operational measures on the case are currently ongoing.
