Baku:The Middle Corridor is advancing into a crucial phase of its development, according to Vice President of Silk Way West Airlines, Vugar Mammadov. He made these remarks during the 'German-Azerbaijani Strategic Partnership and Connectivity Conference 2026.'
According to Azeri-Press news agency, Mammadov emphasized that the focus should not be merely on establishing an additional transport route between Asia and Europe. Instead, the goal is to develop an integrated, reliable, and competitive supply chain ecosystem. He highlighted the necessity for all components, such as railways, ports, airlines, customs, and digital systems, to function cohesively.
Mammadov pointed out that Azerbaijan is ideally positioned to play a connecting role due to its geographical location between Central Asia, the Caspian Sea, the South Caucasus, Trkiye, and Europe. However, he noted that geographical advantage must be complemented by robust infrastructure and capable operators. Azerbaijan has made significant strides in this area, with Silk Way West Airlines working to transform Baku into a global cargo hub, linking Azerbaijan with key markets worldwide.
He also noted the importance of Germany in this system, with 12 weekly flights connecting Azerbaijan and Germany. This connectivity facilitates not only trade between the two countries but also extends to a broader region via Baku. Aviation, he added, brings an additional dimension to the Middle Corridor, complementing traditional rail and maritime transport by catering to different cargo requirements, such as price sensitivity or time constraints.
