Baku: The newspaper 'Akinchi', established in the late 19th century, sparked widespread interest not only in Azerbaijan but also in the broader Caucasus region. Initiated by the prominent scholar Hasan bey Zardabi, who acted as its writer, publisher, and editor, the publication served as a vital pillar of the national enlightenment movement, drawing leading intellectuals to its progressive vision. Through their joint efforts, 'Akinchi' quickly emerged as a vital platform for promoting national awakening and enlightenment. Despite its short lifespan of just 56 issues, the newspaper left an indelible mark on the history of the Azerbaijani national press, said Daghbeyi Ismayilov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of AZERTAC, during his speech at an event marking July 22 - the National Press Day, organized by the Media Development Agency.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, AZERTAC Deputy Chairman of Board noted that the national press has successfully navigated the trials of various socio-political periods along its long and honorable path of development, reaching its current stage of development: 'The contributions of National Leader Heydar Aliyev to the development of the press during the years of independence are of paramount importance. Following the National Leader's return to power, Azerbaijan took consistent and purposeful steps to ensure freedom of speech and the press, and to foster a professional media landscape. Most notable one of these reforms was the abolition of censorship in 1998, which was a landmark decision ushering in a new era in the history of the development of the national press.'

'The attention and care shown to the national press and journalists by National Leader Heydar Aliyev is successfully being continued today by President Ilham Aliyev. Comprehensive reforms remain underway across the country to safeguard freedom of speech, protect press freedom, and foster a modern media landscape,' the Deputy Chairman of Board mentioned.

Daghbeyi Ismayilov emphasized that the Azerbaijani journalists, fulfilling their duty on the information front during the 44-day Patriotic War, played a crucial role in providing accurate coverage, countering disinformation, and conveying the realities of Garabagh to the world community.

'In the post-war period, the national press continues to play a pivotal role in conveying President and Victorious Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev's peace agenda to both domestic and global audiences, highlighting the large-scale restoration efforts in the liberated territories and the implementation of the 'Great Return' Program," the Deputy Chairman of Board concluded.
