Baku: The Baku Court of Appeal resumed hearings on appeals filed by Armenian citizens convicted of various serious offenses, including crimes against peace, war crimes, and terrorism. The defendants, including figures such as Arayik Harutyunyan and Arkadi Ghukasyan, were previously found guilty by the Baku Military Court.

According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the court session was overseen by Judge Elmar Rahimov, with Judges Emin Mehdiyev and Mehriban Garayeva participating. The proceedings provided translators and legal counsel for the defendants, ensuring their right to a fair defense. Prosecutors Abbas Abbasli, Anar Alakbarov, and Sevinc Gasimova were present to represent the state.

The hearing began with the introduction of new defense lawyers for two defendants, Madat Babayan and David Babayan, who were unable to attend due to health issues. The court assured that these new appointments were made in compliance with legal requirements, and the defendants raised no objections.

During the proceedings, defendant Davit Ishkhanyan requested to submit notes after reviewing court records. The court informed him that the notes must be translated into Azerbaijani and submitted in writing. Similarly, David Babayan requested a meeting with his newly appointed lawyer.

The defense presented oral arguments, advocating for the acquittal of their clients. Counsel for Davit Allahverdiyan requested his client's acquittal, while Melikset Pashayan's lawyer sought to overturn the guilty verdict from February 2026. Both defendants expressed their agreement with their lawyers' arguments.

After a recess for defendants to consult with their legal teams, the hearing continued. Ishkhanyan filed a motion to add documents to the case file and reiterated his disagreement with the charges. The next session is set for July 3.

The 2026 verdicts included life sentences for several defendants, including Harutyunyan and Ishkhanyan, and varying prison terms for others involved. The appeals process continues to unfold in the Baku judicial system.
