Baku: The opening ceremony of the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) was held in Baku, attended by President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva. President Aliyev, along with UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacl¡udia Rossbach, welcomed heads of state, government officials, and delegations participating in the session.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, the event featured a family photo session, a video presentation by UN-Habitat, and a cultural program. President Aliyev addressed the attendees, emphasizing the significance of urban development and preservation of historical heritage in Azerbaijan. He highlighted the country's unique position between Europe and Asia, reflected in its architecture, and underscored the harmony between the ancient and modern in Baku.
President Aliyev also shared insights into Azerbaijan's efforts in urban planning, mentioning the declaration of the Year of Urban Planning and collaboration with UN-Habitat in organizing national urban fora since 2022. He described ongoing reconstruction efforts in regions affected by past conflicts and highlighted the Great Return Program aimed at restoring displaced populations to their homes.
The event included video messages from UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres and UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, who highlighted the importance of addressing the global housing crisis. Nga Kor Ming, President of the UN-Habitat Assembly, echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for political will and economic resilience to provide adequate housing for all.
Anacl¡udia Rossbach, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, further addressed the challenges of climate change, displacement, and inadequate housing faced by billions worldwide. She called for collective efforts to advance the New Urban Agenda and emphasized the role of housing in economic growth and social inclusion.
The ceremony concluded with a video dedicated to Azerbaijan, marking the official opening of the 13th World Urban Forum.
