Baku Initiative Group Calls for Comprehensive Approach to Colonial Reparations

Baku: The issue of compensation for the colonial period is being discussed at this event," Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group, said at the international conference titled 'Injustices of Belgian Colonialism and 101 Years of Struggle for Reparations,' organized by the Baku Initiative Group, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Abbas Abbasov emphasized that no compensation or reparations can bring back the people who lost their lives as a result of Belgium's colonial policies in Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi in the 20th century. He highlighted that despite more than 50 years having passed, the issues of reparations, compensation, and justice are still being discussed today.

Abbasov asserted that reparations should not consist solely of financial compensation for the suffering experienced during that period. He pointed out that reparations should also address the long-term legacy of colonialism and the problems created by those policies that persist to this day.
