Baku: Modern-day Baku is increasingly strengthening its position as a dynamically developing urban center of the region, where large-scale infrastructure transformation, urban innovation, and a commitment to sustainable development converge. Against the backdrop of these processes, the city is becoming an important platform for international professional dialogue on the future of cities, territorial reconstruction, and the shaping of new standards for urban environments.
According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, issues related to the reconstruction of post-conflict regions, the development of 'smart' and sustainable communities, as well as the role of architecture and urban planning in ecological and social transformation, are becoming especially relevant. Baku is increasingly viewed as an example of a city striving not only for physical renewal, but also for strengthening its international role through participation in global forums and the exchange of expertise in the field of urbanism.
French urbanist Alain Bertaud, who has a distinguished background with the World Bank and currently collaborates with New York University, shared insights with AZERTAC. He highlighted the significance of Baku hosting the upcoming World Urban Forum 13 (WUF13), noting that such events foster the exchange of ideas and perspectives crucial for urban development.
Bertaud emphasized Azerbaijan's potential in leading sustainable urban development in the South Caucasus due to its significant resources. He pointed out the importance of efficient public transportation in minimizing carbon emissions, which aligns with the country's focus on sustainable development and the green transition.
Reflecting on Baku's unique architectural identity, Bertaud stressed the importance of continuing to develop local architectural traditions, particularly the skilled use of stone, to maintain a distinct Azerbaijani style. He asserted that urban design, including the integration of metro stations with public spaces, plays a crucial role in shaping a city's international image.
