Baku: BP has announced a dramatic decrease in the planning time required for new oil and gas wells, reducing it from 300 days to just 50, thanks to the integration of artificial intelligence technologies. Giovanni Cristofoli, BP's regional president for Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Trkiye, shared this development during the session titled 'Leaders' Speeches: Leaders' Perspectives on Energy Transformation and Future Strategies' at the Baku Energy Forum, as reported by APA-Economics.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Cristofoli emphasized that a critical component for the advancement of Azerbaijan's energy sector is the effective combination of technology, human capital, and efficient management strategies. BP is actively employing various technologies to boost production efficiency at the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) fields. A notable initiative is the implementation of a five-year 4D seismic program, which enables the monitoring of fluid movements within the reservoir.

Cristofoli highlighted BP's collaboration with an artificial intelligence company based in Azerbaijan, which has led to significant enhancements in seismic data processing. This partnership has improved data quality by eliminating 'noise' from seismic readings, and the company is now extending its services to international markets.

"This development goes beyond just an oil and gas project; it signifies the growth of new skills and technological capabilities within Azerbaijan," Cristofoli explained.

Artificial intelligence technologies are also revolutionizing well-planning processes, allowing automation of individual stages. Cristofoli pointed out that while planning a new well previously took around 300 days, this period has now been reduced to approximately 50 days. Additionally, the adoption of geosteering and horizontal drilling technologies facilitates more precise well placement and efficient reserve recovery.

The BP executive also underscored the importance of strong partnerships and human capital, alongside technology, as vital elements in the progression of Azerbaijan's energy sector.
