BP’s Shah Deniz Compression Project to Enhance Long-Term Gas Production

Baku: The “Shah Deniz Compression” project is set to significantly boost long-term gas production at the Shah Deniz gas-condensate field, as revealed by BP’s Vice President for the Caspian region, Bakhtiyar Aslanbeyli, in a statement to APA-Economics. The project aims to extend the duration of peak production at the field, ensuring sustained output levels.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the final investment decision for the “Shah Deniz Compression” project is anticipated soon, marking a pivotal step in the project’s timeline. The project schedule outlines plans for the first low-pressure gas production from the “Shah Deniz Alpha” (SDA) platform by mid-2029, followed by the “Shah Deniz Bravo” (SDB) platform by mid-2030.

The “Shah Deniz Compression” project encompasses an electrically powered Mainly Unmanned Facility (eMUF), including the unmanned Shah Deniz Compression (SDC) platform, subsea gas pipelines for gas export/import between the existing SDA and SDB platforms, and a comprehensive electric and fiber-optic cable (EFOC) system for backup power. The SDC platform, located approximately 3 km from the SDB platform at an underwater depth of 85 meters, will be central to gas compression activities before export to the Sangachal Terminal.

The project will leverage existing infrastructure at the SDA, SDB platforms, and the Sangachal Terminal. While equipment for electric power reception and transmission will be installed, no expansion of the terminal area is required, ensuring the project remains within the current operational footprint.
