According to Azerbaijan State News Agency, with two first-half goals, Vinicius Junior led the way for the five-time world champions, who can now look forward to a Round of 32 encounter in Houston against the runners-up from Group F on June 29. For Scotland, by contrast, the dream of reaching the knockout stage for the first time remains alive. They sit third in the group with three points and a goal difference of minus three.

Scotland had not beaten Brazil in 10 previous meetings, and the size of their task increased in the sixth minute following a gift-wrapped goal by Scott McKenna, the centre-back making his first World Cup appearance. Under pressure from Rayan, his attempted clearance was blocked by the Brazilian and deflected towards Vinicius Junior, who rounded Angus Gunn and found the net for the third consecutive match.

Vinicius Junior later had the ball in the net again after dispossessing Jack Hendry, but following a VAR review, he was adjudged to have fouled the defender.

After that reprieve, Scotland gained a temporary foothold in the match, only to stumble again in first-half stoppage time as Bruno Guimaraes' cross evaded Gunn's outstretched arm and Vinicius Junior headed home. Scotland were denied a consolation goal as Alisson Becker saved Lewis Ferguson's free-kick and then twice thwarted Scott McTominay, helping Brazil secure a second consecutive victory and clean sheet.
