Sofia: Bulgaria is set to enhance its role as a critical transit country for Azerbaijani gas into Europe, aiming to increase the volume of gas supplied via the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector. President Iliana Iotova highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative in a recent discussion with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, emphasizing Bulgaria's dual role as both a consumer and a conduit for Azerbaijani energy.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the potential expansion is part of a broader energy collaboration between the two countries. The 'Solidarity Ring' project, introduced by President Rumen Radev, promises significant growth prospects. Following a Memorandum of Understanding signed by gas transmission operators from Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Azerbaijan, the project could potentially double the export capacity of Azerbaijani gas to the European Union.

The partnership between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan is not limited to fossil fuels. Both nations are actively engaged in two major 'green energy' initiatives: the Caspian-Black Sea-Europe Green Energy Corridor and an overland corridor project linking Azerbaijan, Georgia, Trkiye, and Bulgaria. These projects underscore a commitment to diversify energy sources and promote sustainable development.
