Tbilisi: The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway line is set to significantly enhance regional connectivity, as revealed by Lasha Abashidze, General Director of Georgian Railways JSC, during a panel discussion at the V Tbilisi Silk Way Forum. The announcement highlights the strategic importance of the BTK project in creating seamless connections for countries along the Middle Corridor.
According to Azeri-Press News Agency, the primary advantage of the BTK project lies in its ability to facilitate direct connectivity, which is expected to revolutionize cargo transportation in the region. Abashidze shared that Georgia is actively working on implementing electronic customs clearance with its neighboring countries, a move anticipated to drastically reduce rail cargo transportation time from Azerbaijan to the Black Sea ports from the current 22-24 hours to just 12 hours.
Abashidze further noted that the modernization of railway lines in Georgia has been successfully completed. This modernization effort aims not only to increase the volume of transported cargo but also to enhance the speed of movement, thereby significantly shortening transportation times.
