Baku: ‘The forecasts indicate that the water level in the Caspian Sea will decrease further,’ said Mukhtar Babayev, the Presidential Representative on Climate Issues and President of COP29, in his speech at a round table held within the framework of the ‘Baku Climate Action Week’, APA reports.

According to Azeri-Press News Agency, Babayev highlighted the concerning statistics regarding the Caspian Sea, noting that the number of forecasting models related to the sea exceeds 100. Unfortunately, about 10% of these models predict an increase in water levels, underscoring a significant trend towards decreased water levels.

Babayev warned that the drying up of the Caspian Sea will adversely affect various sectors including fishing, oil production, logistics, and port operations. He noted that individuals residing in these areas are likely to lose their jobs and may be compelled to relocate to urban centers, which could increase urban pressure. Additionally, he cautioned that winds might carry significant amounts of dust and soil from the drying areas to neighboring regions, leading to further negative impacts.
