BEIJING: China and Azerbaijan are joining forces in a significant green energy venture, aiming to expand renewable energy projects across Azerbaijan with a capacity of 2 GW, as reported by Trend News Agency.

According to Trend News Agency, a memorandum of understanding was signed in June 2023 between Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy and China Gezhouba Group Overseas Investment. The partnership marks the beginning of various projects including the development of solar energy, onshore and offshore wind energy, energy storage, and integrated smart energy systems. Additionally, the collaboration will explore the production of green hydrogen in Azerbaijan.

The agreement also includes the involvement of Chinese Dongfang company in constructing the 230 MW Garadagh solar power plant and a significant thermal power plant with a capacity of 1,280 MW in Mingachevir, which is expected to be operational by 2025. These initiatives underscore China’s role as a key player in Azerbaijan’s energy sector, particularly in regio
ns that have been recently liberated.

The growing demand for energy in Azerbaijan comes with an increased focus on transitioning to renewable energy sources to counter climate change effects. China’s investment and technological expertise in solar and wind energy are seen as vital to supporting Azerbaijan’s green transition. This cooperation could pave the way for broader economic ties between the two nations.

Furthermore, the partnership aligns with China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, emphasizing energy security. The implementation of green energy projects is anticipated to not only enhance Azerbaijan’s energy production capabilities but also contribute to regional energy diversification.
